The Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Real Estate (HASRE) team has experience across a variety of infrastructure, sustainability, and energy efficiency financing platforms (C-PACE, ESAs & PPAs), deep knowledge of the commercial real estate industry and capital stack management including ground–up, rehab or retrofit construction projects), as well as a thorough understanding of energy industry trends.

Eric J. Alini

Managing Partner

Eric Alini provides executive management to the HASRE partnership.  Mr. Alini serves as the CEO of the Counterpointe Energy Partners LLC, a green energy finance company focused on Property Assessed Clean Energy. Prior to founding the Counterpointe Group, Mr. Alini was a Managing Director in the Global Structured Finance and Investment Group at Merrill Lynch. In this role, Mr. Alini was responsible for the Principal Finance group investing in over $18 billion of alternative assets for Merrill Lynch’s own capital. He also managed the Merrill Lynch Bank USA’s portfolio of asset-backed securities. Mr. Alini was a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch for 13 years and held a number of other senior positions in his career with Merrill Lynch including Head of CMBS trading, Head of International CMBS, and Head of Global Corporate Loan Portfolio Management.

David S. Schaefer

COO

David S. Schaefer oversees operations for the HASRE partnership.  Mr. Schaefer is the Chief Operating Officer of Counterpointe SRE and its affiliates, responsible for implementing business strategies, plans and procedures and participating in expansion activities and corporate alliances. Prior to joining Counterpointe, Mr. Schaefer spent more than 21 years at Loeb & Loeb LLP, an Am Law 100 law firm, where he served as Deputy Chairman, Managing Partner and Chair of the Corporate Department. Mr. Schaefer was the architect and driving force behind the firm’s strategy and its adoption of proven business practices from outside the legal industry. Prior to Loeb & Loeb, Mr. Schaefer was a partner at Shea & Gould, where he was Head of the Banking and Finance Practice. Mr. Schaefer is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the New York University School of Law.

Susan Nickey

Managing Director

Ms. Nickey joined Hannon Armstrong in 2014 as a managing director. Previously, she founded and served as chief executive officer of Threshold Power. Prior to Threshold, Ms. Nickey was the chief financial officer of ACCIONA Energy North America from 2007-2010 and was a managing director of investment banking in the project finance group of Mesirow Financial before that. She currently serves on the board of directors of the American Wind Energy Association and its finance committee and the board of directors of the American Council of Renewable Energy and its executive committee. Ms. Nickey is a frequent speaker at renewable energy events, particularly on topics related to capital markets and financing trends for clean energy, including wind, solar and storage. Ms. Nickey holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Science in foreign service from Georgetown University.

Robert Johnson

Senior Vice President

Mr. Johnson is responsible for growing Hannon Armstrong’s financing solutions in the public sector which includes the federal, state & local and healthcare market segments. Mr. Johnson has been at the leading edge of the energy efficiency industry where he has built businesses across a broad range of systems and services. Prior to joining Hannon Armstrong, Mr. Johnson held executive leadership positions at multinational organizations such as Cooper Industries where he led global sales for one of their divisions, Ingersoll Rand (Trane) where he led North American Institutional Sales which included healthcare, government and education segments, and Johnson Controls Federal Systems Division where he was the global sales leader. Mr. Johnson began his career at Honeywell where he held leadership positions in various divisions of Honeywell during his 15-year tenure. He has been published in Military Engineer magazine and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland.

Sal Tarsia

Managing Director, New Construction

Sal Tarsia has over 20 years of experience in commercial real estate with expertise in structured lending, as well as, CMBS originations and underwriting. Prior to joining HASRE, Mr. Tarsia co-founded Bedrock Capital Associates, a boutique, commercial real estate lending platform where he served as Head of Originations.

Previously, Mr. Tarsia served as a Senior Vice President within Capmark Finance (formerly GMAC Commercial Mortgage), where he co-headed Lending Operations and managed the New York office of Capmark’s Proprietary Lending Group. Mr. Tarsia’s team originated an annual average of $4 Billion of CMBS, structured floating rate mortgages and subordinate debt on all commercial real estate asset types nationwide between 2005 and 2007.

Mr. Tarsia received a Master of Science degree from New York University’s Real Estate Institute majoring in Real Estate Investment and Valuation.

Taimur Jamil

Managing Director, Market Activation

Taimur Jamil was most recently at Spruce Finance, a specialty consumer finance company, where he was recruited as part of a team to develop its PACE program; he subsequently assumed responsibility for managing firm-wide credit policy. Prior to Spruce, he was the head of capital markets and asset management at Sol-Wind (later SPI Energy), a renewable energy MLP. Prior to Sol-Wind, he was a partner at Counterpointe Capital Management, a $250 million credit fund that invested in delinquent tax liens.

Mr. Jamil has also spent time at Merrill Lynch in its principal finance group and prior to that in the structured finance group at Moody’s Investors Service, where he was the lead analyst for esoteric assets. Mr. Jamil started his career as a software engineer at Cambridge Technology Partners.

Mr. Jamil has an MBA in Finance and Strategic Management from the University of Chicago, a ME in Engineering Management from Dartmouth College, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.

Jeanne Dering

Chief Financial Officer

Jeanne Dering brings more than 30 years of financial experience to the HASRE partnership as Counterpointe Sustainable Real Estate’s Chief Financial Officer. Dering spent more than ten years at Moody’s Corporation, where she served several roles including EVP of Global Regulatory Affairs and Compliance as well as Chief Financial Officer. Her tenure at Moody’s included executive leadership of the finance, accounting, and investor relations organizations. Prior to Moody’s, Dering held management positions at Dun & Bradstreet and Arthur Andersen & Co.

Michele Pitale M.D.

Managing Director, Middle Markets

Michele Pitale has expertise in deep energy retrofits as well as special applications of C-PACE financing related to resiliency (wind, stormwater and seismic) as well as the emerging market for green/living roofs. Prior to focusing on sustainable energy finance, Dr. Pitale was an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Otolaryngology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Pitale also was a postdoctoral research fellow, in the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a surgeon in the Critical Care Medical Department at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda MD.

After receiving her medical degree from Temple University, Dr. Pitale completed her surgical residency at SUNY-Downstate and served as the Chief Resident at Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Pitale holds a BS in chemistry from Juniata College in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Pitale’s background provides a unique perspective on the scientific and business needs of sustainable real estate markets..

Amanda Blade Samai

Managing Director, Strategic Relationships

Amanda Samai is a Managing Director at HASRE and CounterpointeSRE and head of Strategic Relationships for the firm. Amanda has been involved with PACE financing and investing since 2013. Prior to joining Counterpointe in 2017 Amanda spent 12 years as a Managing Director at PartnerRe Principal Finance originating private, esoteric debt transactions. It was during her time there that she became familiar with PACE and worked on a number of transactions to provide investment capital to originators of PACE assessments.

Amanda has over 20 years of structured finance and private debt investing experience. Prior to her tenure at PartnerRe Amanda worked as a portfolio manager at the Teacher Retirement System of Texas as well as MBIA, Inc. She started her career in audit at Deloitte and holds a CPA (inactive) license in the state of New York.

Travis Levy, CFA

Director, Credit

Travis Levy has over twenty years of experience in banking and finance. He has held credit and sales roles at PNC and Citibank in corporate banking, commercial real estate, and specialty finance. He is a CFA charter holder and holds the Energy Risk Professional (ERP) designation.
